The short answer
If you already own LA12X amplifiers and K-series rigging, stay with K2. If your fleet is JBL-based, or you need a lower cabinet weight per element, VTX A12 is the more sensible used purchase. Buying a single hang of the other brand rarely pays off unless you are starting a new system.
Cabinet and coverage
The K2 is a 56 kg three-way element with adjustable 70°, 90° and 110° horizontal coverage. The VTX A12 is roughly 59 kg with a fixed 105° horizontal pattern. On paper they are close; in a room, the K2's ability to narrow the horizontal pattern is useful for long, reverberant halls where you want energy on the seats and not on the walls.
The VTX A12's fixed pattern is simpler to plan and harder to misuse. For rental companies sending systems out with freelance engineers, fewer adjustable variables is often an advantage.
Amplification and processing
This is the real dividing line. K2 expects LA12X with factory presets; VTX A12 expects Crown I-Tech or JBL VTX amps with its own presets. If you already run one ecosystem, the cost of switching is not the cabinets — it is amps, cable, processing and staff training.
Used K2 without LA12X is a project. Used VTX A12 without Crown amps is the same project in a different colour.
Rigging and transport
Check what bumper, fly bar and link hardware comes with the hang. A set of eight cabinets without the correct bumper is not a system, it is inventory. Ask for the rigging certificate and inspect the pins and shackles; rigging hardware is the one part of a used purchase that should never be accepted on photos alone.
Transport is the other hidden cost. Both models travel four-to-a-case or in dedicated carts. If cases are not included, price them before you commit.
Driver condition and parts
K2 drivers are widely supported but not cheap. VTX A12 drivers are similarly available. Ask for per-driver impedance and a sweep record. A hang with two weak mid drivers will sound different from the other side of the stage, and matching a used driver later is harder than it sounds.
What we would buy
For a rental fleet with existing L-Acoustics inventory: K2, ideally a complete hang with bumper and cases. For a mixed fleet or an install where weight and simplicity matter: VTX A12 in sets of four with fresh grilles. In both cases, buy the tested hang with documentation, not the cheapest unattested lot.
